HI I have the opportunity to create a chocolate life size body cast. I am thinking either plaster or silicone cast of my body then fill it in with chocolate. Any tips on how to keep it from blooming? or ideas about how to go about this project
what do you think?

Fri, November 25, 2005 - 9:16 PMI would not use plaster, as for more info I will have to think on this, I wish I had the opportunity, you are very lucky. It is first of all going to take a lot of chocolate.... sounds like a blast. I will have to check on what to use as a molding for your body, I will post as soon as I can about it though. let me know what ideas you hear though, it is most interesting. -

Re: body casting
Mon, December 5, 2005 - 7:50 AMHow to keep the chocolate from blooming? When dealing with that amount of chocolate, and the time it's going to take to mold it, you're going to be in a bind, i think.
But i would suggest, since the cast will be split in to, that you do it in layers.
When i work with large peices (1-10 lb of chocolate... dang you took on a huge project), that's how i do it. I temper the chocolate in batches, then fill & dump, fill and dump just like a smaller mold.
You really are going to need a tempering machine, i would say. if you have that, it won't be any problem. I just saw a christmas show with a chocolate house, chocolate human sized santa, etc. If the chocolate is tempered when it's poured, it shouldn't bloom. -

Re: body casting
Mon, December 5, 2005 - 5:41 PMYeah I think the guy with chocolate has a tempering machine he owns a great chocolate company-organic too. I found a bronze body cast that i might order. I am starting to run out of time trying to figure this out i need to just choose a body cast kit, there's laytex and silicone too.
thanks for the reflections Kip.. -

didn't know you coudl get that.
this is teh single best type of casting for any chocolate mold. you'll want to make sure it's well supported, but silicone is food grade, does nto rust, does not flake off, etc.
I have many of my special order small molds made in silicon.
sorry, i should have said that first, but didn't know it was an option. :-)
